Forex sessions: when the market moves
Why Sydney, Tokyo, London and New York behave differently, and what overlaps mean.
A market that follows the sun
Forex trades around the clock from Monday morning in Sydney to Friday afternoon in New York. Four financial centres define the day: Sydney, Tokyo, London and New York. Each has local business hours, and the busiest moments come when two sessions are open at once.
What each session is known for
- Sydney and Tokyo (Asian hours): quieter, narrower ranges in most pairs, with more activity in AUD, NZD and JPY crosses.
- London: the largest share of volume, with strong moves in EUR, GBP and CHF pairs.
- New York: US economic data and the dollar drive moves, and volatility is highest while London is still open.
Overlaps
The London and New York overlap is usually the most liquid and volatile period of the day. Liquidity and spreads are generally best then, but price can also move fast, which matters if you are managing a ladder. Use the live sessions clock on the home page and dashboard to see which sessions are open right now.
Daylight saving time
Sessions follow local clock time, so their UTC times shift when each country changes its clocks. PipLadder's clock accounts for this automatically.
